Friesen Elektra Explores Data Center Project In Lower Saxony, Germany

Friesen Elektra is exploring a data center at its planned Wasserstoffpark Friesland green hydrogen site near Sande, Lower Saxony. The company has applied for a zoning exemption to allow the project. No IT capacity has been disclosed, while the wider hydrogen park is planned for 400MW of power generation.

Sande’s municipal building committee has discussed the zoning application, as the site is not currently approved for data center construction. A briefing found that potential light and noise pollution would be similar to the already-approved Wasserstoffpark Friesland. The application will next go to the town’s administrative committee before being sent to district authorities for final approval.

Friesen Elektra says any data center at Wasserstoffpark Friesland would use the 380kV grid and surplus renewable power without affecting local electricity supplies. Cooling would use an expanded closed-loop water system based on wastewater, seawater drainage, and surface water. Founded in 1999, Friesen Elektra operates wind and solar plants across northern Germany. Its 400MW hydrogen facility was approved in June and could produce up to 80,000 tonnes of green hydrogen annually.
