A new municipal data center is under construction in Meppen, Lower Saxony, Germany, as part of Emsland’s broader IT infrastructure upgrade. The €3.4 million ($3.8 million) facility is expected to be completed by the end of 2027, though local authorities have not disclosed its planned capacity.

The data center will be added to the Meppen district administration building, spanning 7,060 sq ft (655 sqm) across three floors. Classified as critical infrastructure under German law, the facility is intended to improve resilience against outages, external threats, and natural disasters. District administrator Marc-André Burgdorf said the project will help secure the municipality’s data and power supply for decades.

The Meppen data center is expected to cost €2.24 million ($2.56 million), with a further €1.2 million ($1.37 million) allocated for technical systems such as an uninterruptible power supply. The three-story facility will include office space on two floors and server areas on the third, with secure access controls. Lower Saxony’s data center market remains relatively small, though several larger projects are planned in the region.Meppen_Kreishaus.width-358.png
