Digital Realty has opened a new data center in Barcelona, marking its first facility in the city. The BCN1 site is located at Av. del Maresme, 43 in the Sant Adrià de Besòs innovation district. Digital Realty, through its subsidiary Interxion, announced plans in 2022 for a 15MW data center in Barcelona. The company now says the facility will provide 14MW of planned capacity across 15,000 sqm (161,455 sq ft).
“Barcelona is emerging as a world-class digital gateway to the Mediterranean,” said Fabrice Coquio, SVP, managing director, Europe Med, Digital Realty. “Digital Realty’s Barcelona Campus puts us right at the heart of that transformation, built to the highest sustainability standards. Together with our campuses in Madrid and Lisbon, we are proud to offer our customers a highly interconnected and environmentally responsible regional platform on the Iberian Peninsula.”
Digital Realty said the Barcelona facility will be linked to its southern European connectivity hub in Marseille. The city is also a landing point for subsea cables including 2Africa and Medusa. The BCN1 data center will use HVO100 biodiesel to power its backup generators.
