Currently, Equinix is planning to construct a second data center in Barcelona, Spain. Last week, the colocation giant revealed its intentions to build BA2, an International Business Exchange (IBX) facility right next to its current BA1 location. We were not given any information on the project's specs, electricity output, or estimated completion date. A local newspaper, however, reports that the building would be 2,700 square feet in size, provide 3.41MW of power, and be open for business in the first quarter of 2024. According to reports, the corporation plans to put $55.6 million into the venture. According to reports, BA2 would run on entirely renewable energy and was planned with LEED certification in mind.

Exquinix's BA1 data center in Barcelona's L'Hospitalet de Llobregat neighborhood features over 16,000 square feet of colocation space.  Equinix manages three IBX locations in Spain: one in Barcelona, one in Seville, and two in Madrid (MD1 and MD1). The business stated last year that it would build a new IBX facility in Madrid (codenamed MD6) and an xScale facility (codenamed MD3x) in Amsterdam. All of Equinix's Spanish data centers, including MD6 and MD3x in Madrid, were acquired in 2017 when the company paid $259 million to acquire Itconic from local operator Carlyle Group.
