European data center provider Data4 is constructing a second Spanish campus outside Madrid. The company disclosed plans for a new data center facility in San Agustn del Guadalix, a town located north of Madrid and close to the Sierra de Guadarrama, last week. The new MAD02 campus will encompass four buildings with 172,000 square feet of IT space and 80 megawatts of power. The business intends to invest $583,2 million in the initiative. The first phase of the building is slated to break ground next month. The first phase will begin in 2025, with campus construction continuing until 2029.

Proposed sustainability initiatives for the new campus include reusing surplus heat to heat homes, recycling rainwater and gray water, employing low-emission concrete and recycled wood fiber coatings, and installing solar panels. The new San Agustn del Guadalix campus joins the Alcobendas-based MAD01 campus. Established in 2020, the eight-hectare facility will host six structures totaling 70MW at full build-out. The third structure is expected to be completed by the end of 2024.

Data4, founded in 2006 by Colony Capital (now DigitalBridge), maintains approximately 30 data centers across France, Italy, Spain, Poland, and Luxembourg. Additionally, the company is developing a former military facility in Hanau, Germany, that could reach 2.1 million square feet and 180 megawatts. In 2018, AXA Investment Managers bought the business for an undisclosed sum, with the Danish pension fund PFA acquiring a 20 percent stake in 2020. In 2021, the operator secured $737,500,000 in debt financing to finance its European expansion objectives.
