Data center firm Avaio Digital this week announced its first data center in Spain, in the town of Algete in the Community of Madrid. The €650 million ($759m) project – known as Algete Data Hub and Avaio Digital Scorpio – has secured 56.3MW of power with Iberdrola, in addition to the initial 8MW of power for which an interconnection agreement with Iberdrola has been finalized, with delivery starting in 2028.

Mark McComiskey, CEO of Avaio Digital, said: "Madrid is a leading European hub for cloud computing and AI development, and we are delighted to partner with the City of Algete to make a significant investment in expanding the region's digital and energy infrastructure. Spain provides a unique opportunity for hyperscalers to rapidly expand their digital presence in close proximity to established data center markets in a highly sustainable way."

Pedro Blanco, project manager in Spain for Avaio Digital, added: "This project contributes to consolidating Madrid's northern data center axis and Algete's emerging position as a data center hub. Avaio’s sustainable design will allow for the redevelopment of an old industrial site in an environmentally friendly manner. We are very excited about this significant development milestone."
