Blue Energy, GE Vernova Hitachi Advance 2.5GW Texas Power Plant for Data Center

US nuclear energy company Blue Energy and GE Vernova Hitachi Nuclear Energy have agreed to advance a 2.5GW gas-and-nuclear power plant in Victoria, Texas, to supply a nearby data center. The project will combine GE Vernova gas turbines with BWRX-300 small modular reactors. Blue Energy plans to provide 1GW to the data center from gas turbines in 2030, followed by up to 1.5GW from five SMRs starting in 2032.

The BWRX-300 is a 300MW boiling water reactor and is central to Blue Energy’s deployment strategy. Its “Blue Way” model involves prefabricating, transporting, and assembling nuclear plants off-site. Unlike traditional nuclear companies, Blue Energy does not manufacture reactors. Instead, it designs modular nuclear plants that are built at shipyards and transported to their final locations. The first BWRX-300 is under construction at Ontario Power Generation’s Darlington site in Canada.

"We are shifting from the old way of building large reactor nuclear power to instead do it the 'Blue Way' that slashes costs and time to power and finally makes nuclear a financeable, repeatable product."

The power plant is expected to supply up to 1.5GW to a data center being developed by Crusoe at the Port of Victoria. Crusoe signed an agreement with Blue Energy in October to power the planned 1,600-acre campus, with power delivery initially targeted for 2028. The deal was Crusoe’s first partnership with a nuclear power company. The company has since partnered with Aalo Atomics on a potential SMR-powered data center project at Idaho National Laboratory.unnamed_lLZTLJR.width-880.png
