Amazon Web Services (AWS) has dropped plans for a data center campus next to Maryland's Calvert Cliffs Nuclear Power Plant. The proposed project in Lusby, Calvert County, would have included eight buildings totaling 2.46 million square feet (228,540 sqm) and around 500MW of capacity, powered under an agreement with Constellation Energy. Local reports also linked Rowan Digital Infrastructure to the development.
AWS confirmed it has dropped plans for the Calvert County project, saying it decided "not to move forward" after evaluating factors including development timelines, operational requirements, and its ability to deliver quickly for customers. The decision comes as Calvert County considers a six-month moratorium on new data center development, with the county council expected to vote on the proposal this week.
“The proposed ordinance would establish a temporary moratorium to allow time to review and adopt regulations and zoning ordinance text amendments related to data centers and heavy industrial use conditions, and to complete any necessary studies or analysis,” the county said.
Separately, Natelli Holdings is pursuing a data center development on land south of the proposed AWS site. AWS is also facing challenges with its planned Fastnet subsea cable landing in Ocean City, Maryland. Worcester County has imposed a 12-month moratorium on permits for new data centers and cable landing stations, although developer Globalinx said the measure has not affected its agreement with Amazon.
