Details have emerged about Amazon's latest planned data center campus in Northern Virginia. Loudoun County Supervisor Juli E. Briskman (D-Algonkian) said this week that Amazon has filed plans to develop a four-building, 800,000 sq ft (74,320 sqm) data center campus at the former George Washington University site in Ashburn. The development will be known as the Bridgefield Tech Center. Amazon acquired the university's 122-acre Virginia Science and Technology Campus in March for $427 million.
Amazon has filed plans for four two-story data center buildings at the former George Washington University site in Ashburn. The application, shared by Loudoun County Supervisor Juli E. Briskman, seeks by-right approval under older zoning rules that could bypass public review. Briskman opposes new data center developments and is pushing for a countywide moratorium.
“Replacing the George Washington University campus with four massive data center buildings would be a profound loss for our community,” Briskman said in a statement. “The site offers a generational opportunity for education, research, housing, and other forms of economic development that could directly benefit Loudoun residents. I strongly oppose this proposal and will fight it every step of the way. I will use every tool available to challenge this proposal and protect Loudoun County residents from the impacts of inappropriate data center development.”
GWU will retain the site for up to five years while relocating operations. The Ashburn campus, launched in 1991, houses the School of Nursing, 17 research facilities, around 850 faculty and staff, and the university’s main data center. Amazon already has a significant data center presence across Virginia, with AWS launching its first cloud facilities in Loudoun County in 2006. Its footprint now spans dozens of owned and leased facilities across the region, with further expansion underway.
