AWS Eyes Data Center Development at 4.5GW Gas Plant in Pennsylvania

Amazon Web Services (AWS) is exploring a potential data center development at a natural gas power plant near Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. First reported by TribLive, Amazon is considering a data center campus next to the planned Homer City Redevelopment gas plant in Indiana County.

“As part of our commitment to invest at least $20 billion in Pennsylvania, we are evaluating multiple sites across the commonwealth. While we don’t have a definitive agreement in place, we are in discussions with Homer City Redevelopment,” an Amazon spokesman said this week of talks with the company that owns the property.

TribLive uncovered the potential AWS project through emails obtained via freedom of information requests, though details remain undisclosed. The 4.5GW gas plant, 50 miles (80 km) east of Pittsburgh, is under construction and expected online in 2028. The site previously hosted a 2GW coal plant, while data centers have been identified as potential customers for the new facility. Homer City Redevelopment declined to comment.

Amazon has pledged around $20 billion in data center investment across Pennsylvania. AWS has also been pursuing development in Salem Township since early 2024, acquiring a Talen Energy data center and about 1,200 acres next to its nuclear plant. The company plans up to 15 buildings at the site.
