atNorth has announced that it is to build a third data center campus in Iceland, on a plot of land in Akureyri in the northern part of the country. Named IC03, the site will span 4,000 sqm (43,000 sq ft), and include six data halls with 12MW of capacity.
According to Eyjólfur Magnús Kristinsson, atNorth CEO, the decision to expand in Iceland is "strategic," as it's already a thriving tech hub, and will offer "many" job opportunities to an "excellent and talented workforce." Likewise, the company will also take advantage of Iceland's climate and geothermal energy sources - as a result, the facilities will use 100 percent renewable energy.
Speaking about the news from atNorth, Ásthildur Sturludóttir, the mayor of Akureyri, said: "We welcome the development of this site in Akureyri. The project complements recent infrastructure projects in the Northeast of the country, that will ensure safe and secure transfer of electricity to the area. Increasing the access to electricity as well as the security in the transfer to the Northeast makes this type of development possible."
