In January 2026, the Brenham City Council voted to deny a tax phase-in request for a $100 million high-performance computing (HPC) hub proposed by the technology firm Viridien. The master plan for the 21-acre site includes an administration building and a total of up to three data center buildings slated for completion by 2028. The initial phase of the project focuses on the construction of a single 40,000-square-foot data center facility utilizing advanced immersion-cooling technology to support Earth science and data processing research.
Despite Viridien's commitment to funding its own electrical infrastructure, the project faced heavy local opposition, with over 100 residents attending the meeting to voice concerns over the industrial scale of the development. While the land sale was finalized in mid-2025, the council’s decision ensures the project will proceed without the benefit of local tax incentives.
