In 2022, Marathon announced it was relocating its mining operations from the Hardin facility to other locations that use more sustainable power sources. This decision was part of the company's commitment to becoming carbon-neutral.

In 2020, Marathon Digital Holdings established a joint venture with Beowulf Energy to operate a Bitcoin mining data center in Hardin, Montana. This facility, known as the Big Horn Data Hub, was powered by the Hardin Generating Station, a coal-fired power plant.
