A newly proposed data center project in Lakeland, Florida, faces immediate zoning hurdles. Dubbed Project Swan, the proposal outlines a 600,000 square foot facility on roughly 60 acres, with engineering firm Kimley-Horn tied to the development.
While the project remains active, the developer recently canceled a city review meeting after learning that Lakeland’s current Land Development Code does not explicitly permit data centers. To move forward, the applicant must navigate a complex planning track requiring land annexation, rezoning, and a Planned Unit Development (PUD) approval.
