The Monarch Compute Campus is a massive, 2,250-acre AI mega-project in Mason County, West Virginia, designed to scale to an unprecedented gigawatts (GW) of power capacity. Developed by AI hyperscaler Nscale following its March 2026 acquisition of AIPCorp, the site operates as the nation's first state-certified, "behind-the-meter" AI microgrid, utilizing a dedicated pipeline of Marcellus Shale natural gas to power hundreds of localized Caterpillar internal combustion engines.
This entirely self-contained, off-grid architecture bypasses regional grid constraints while completely protecting local ratepayers from rising utility costs.
