Go to PodcastThe Kaarst Data Center (RZF) in North Rhine-Westphalia, Germany, is a state-owned facility serving as the digital backbone of the NRW Finance Administration (tax processing, software development, automation, and printing infrastructure).
Developed by Landmarken AG and completed in 2026, the ~37,000 m² sustainable complex was acquired by the state in early 2026 for enhanced security against espionage and cyber threats. It houses around 1,000 employees and features geothermal energy, rooftop solar, waste heat reuse, and near-CO₂-neutral operation. SPIE manages technical building operations, while the RZF itself runs the critical internal IT systems. Located near Düsseldorf in Kaarst, it replaced older facilities in the state capital and supports high-security, efficient public services.
