Lyon County commissioners have approved a rezoning request for the "Monarch Data Center" in Nevada, changing the 505-acre site’s designation from Agriculture to Specific Plan. While the project still needs further approvals before construction begins, it has already faced pushback from local residents concerned about environmental impacts and the transparency of the approval process.
The proposed development spans two adjacent parcels and will feature 14 buildings totaling 4.6 million square feet of data center space. The northern parcel, Campus One, is planned to hold eight buildings and a substation, while the southern Campus Two will house the remaining six buildings and a second substation.
To support its massive power needs, the campus will include a 500MW natural gas generation system using single-cycle turbines, battery storage systems, and a new connection to the expanded Fort Churchill substation. Despite these detailed plans, the project remains a point of contention within the local community.
