The Columbia Data Center is Microsoft's data center facility located in Quincy, Washington. Microsoft purchased the property in Quincy in 2006. The data center building opened in April 2007 and became fully operational in May 2007.
Until 2015, it was reported to be the world's largest data center. Microsoft chose this location due to three main factors: low land costs, abundant data fiber connectivity, and extremely low-cost electricity. The local utility, Grant County PUD, provided power at rates as low as 1.9 or 2.5 cents per kilowatt-hour.
The facility has expanded significantly since its inception. It began with a 470,000-square-foot building in 2006.
