MetLife: Troy, NY

Insurance company MetLife is set to invest $288 million in upgrading its data center located in the Rensselaer Technology Park in North Greenbush, New York. The Rensselaer County Industrial Development Agency (IDA) has approved $22 million in tax breaks for this project.

• The data center, a 200,000 sq ft (18,580 sqm) facility has been operated by MetLife since 1992, when the company purchased the site for $50 million.
• The planned improvements, detailed in a Notice of Public Hearing, include repairs or replacements to the roof, sidewalks, and parking lots, as well as maintenance, repair, or replacement of mechanical, electrical, heating, and air conditioning equipment. The upgrade also covers computer equipment such as mainframe, server, and peripheral computer systems.
• Despite the significant investment and tax breaks, the project is not expected to create new jobs. The site currently employs 28 full-time and two part-time workers, a notable decrease from the 200 employees mentioned in previous tax-break applications.
