GIGA-42, a new joint venture between Global InterConnection Group Limited and Northern DC AS, is set to build a massive AI-focused data center in northern Iceland. The project, a collaboration with the Norðurþing Municipality, will be located at Bakki, Húsavík.
The first phase aims to be the beginning of one of Iceland's first hyperscale data centers. Construction is scheduled to start in the first half of 2026, with the initial operations beginning in 2027.
This new facility will leverage Iceland's natural advantages: renewable geothermal power, a cold climate for efficient cooling, and access to district heating networks. These features are expected to make it one of the most advanced and sustainable AI data centers in Europe.
Global Interconnection Group (GIG) is an energy infrastructure firm that focuses on the development, ownership, and operation of interconnector cables and other power transmission assets. The company's primary business model addresses the growing need for energy security and decarbonization by building physical connections between different countries' electricity grids. GIG's work is critical to a net-zero future, as it facilitates the efficient transfer of energy from where it is generated, particularly from renewable sources like wind and geothermal, to where it's needed.
