The Charlotte-based developer Drox Group LLC has proposed a massive $3 billion hyperscale data center campus, known as "Project Iron Spur," on 129 acre in Rural Hall, North Carolina. The plan outlines the construction of four two-story buildings totaling 1.3 million square feet, standing 78 feet tall, alongside a dedicated Duke Energy substation and rows of diesel backup generators.
However, the project faces intense local pushback; the Rural Hall Town Council unanimously voted against it in April, and a resident petition has garnered over 2,100 signatures citing concerns over noise, strained utilities, and property values. Because Rural Hall relies on county zoning ordinances, the final rezoning decision rests with the Forsyth County Board of Commissioners, with a critical public hearing and official vote scheduled for June 11, 2026. If ultimately approved, the campus is expected to take four to five years to construct, targeting initial operations around 2028 and full capacity by 2031.
