Amazon had plans for a massive data center campus in Manassas, Virginia, but in December 2022, the company decided to pause the plans after county staff recommended the denial of the project. The proposed development, located in Prince William County, would have covered 80 acres across three adjacent plots between Ashton Avenue and Sudley Road, next to the Manassas mall.
The ambitious project called for the construction of four two-story data centers, each with a floor space of 256,500 sq ft (23,800 sqm), totaling approximately 1 million sq ft (92,900 sqm) of data center space. Additionally, the plans included a substation to support the facility's power needs.
However, the project faced opposition from county staff, who argued that the large-scale data center complex was incompatible with the surrounding residential and commercial properties. This resistance likely contributed to Amazon's decision to pause the development.
