Meta's Forest City campus sits in Rutherford County, North Carolina, about 65 miles west of Charlotte, between US 74 and Old Caroleen Road. Facebook announced the project in November 2010. It bought the land from Rutherford County in the Rutherford Corporate Center, the former J.C. Cowan plant and Mako Marine boat factory. Crews demolished the old factory in 2011 to make room for the second building.

Meta subsidiary Andale LLC owns four parcels that total about 153 acres. Andale, Inc. holds the site's records with the North Carolina Division of Air Quality.

Power and infrastructure. Duke Energy Carolinas serves the campus through an on-site 100 kV substation at the Social Circle entrance. Fifty diesel emergency generators, most rated 3,000 kW, back up the data center buildings. The cold storage building has no UPS and only one small standby generator. The state rescinded the campus air permit in June 2024 because actual emissions fell below permitting thresholds. Meta matches the campus's electricity use with clean energy and supports six North Carolina projects that add 410 MW of new renewable generation.

Water. The Town of Forest City supplies water and wastewater service. The buildings cool with outside air and evaporative cooling, and they reuse water before discharge.

Milestones. Facebook announced a second building in October 2011 and later added a three-hall cold storage building. In October 2015 it announced a third building of 480,000 sq ft with more than $200 million of investment. DPR Construction and Fortis Construction built the first buildings. Meta reports more than $750 million invested and 275+ operational jobs. The operational buildings hold LEED Gold certification.
