Google's Southlands campus sits on one 928-acre lot, Southlands Subdivision Lot 1, at 10410 Bunge Avenue on the south edge of Council Bluffs, Iowa. Google's first Council Bluffs data center, near Lake Manawa, is a separate site about four miles north.

Land and ownership. Questa LLC, a Google affiliate, holds the land and the campus air permits. Google bought the farmland starting in 2007 and recorded the current consolidated plat in 2024. MidAmerican Energy's Walter Scott Jr. Energy Center sits just to the west.

Build history.

  • Google announced the campus in 2012. Construction of the first building started that year.
  • A second, two-story building followed in 2013 and 2014.
  • In 2015 Google announced a $1 billion, four-story building. Its three sections went up from 2015 to 2021.
  • A row of single-story buildings on the east half started in 2023, backed by investments of $350 million (2023) and $1 billion (2024).
  • In 2026 Iowa DNR issued generator permits for two more buildings, part of Google's $7 billion Iowa program announced in 2025.

Shared infrastructure. MidAmerican Energy serves the campus. Two large on-site substations serve the west half and two more serve the east buildings. A central utility plant with cooling towers and two large storage tanks serves the four-story building. Diesel emergency generators back up every building, and Iowa DNR permits cover more than 500 engines at the site.

Renewables. In April 2014 Google agreed to buy up to 407 MW of Iowa wind energy from MidAmerican's Wind VIII projects for its Council Bluffs data centers.
