European data center operator Virtus has begun construction of a 204MW facility outside Berlin, Germany. Located around 12km (7.4 miles) west of the capital in the municipality of Wustermark, the company plans to invest a total of €3 billion ($3.5 billion) in the project.
“This ambitious undertaking is Virtus' second site in the Berlin Brandenburg region and follows hot on the heels of the announcement of our Berlin Marienpark Campus in May 2023,” said Virtus’ VP of business development EMEA, Christina Mertens, when the Wustermark campus was originally announced. “As we take this step, we are proud to contribute to the vibrant data center landscape of Berlin Brandenburg.”
Construction is beginning with the project’s substation, which is scheduled for completion by 2027, according to Märkische Allgemeine. The rest of the campus will be built in phases to Tier III+ standards, with the first unit expected to be operational in early 2028. The development will comprise nine data center buildings, with waste heat from server halls fed into a district heating network serving the nearby Havelland and Potsdam regions. Each facility will support high-density racks and use closed-loop chilled water cooling systems suited for HPC and AI workloads. A significant portion of the site’s power is expected to come from nearby onshore wind farms.
Founded in 2008, Virtus is headquartered in the UK and operates four data center campuses in the Greater London area. Additional campuses are planned in Buckinghamshire in central England and in Milan, northern Italy. The company also broke ground last year on another Berlin campus in the Marienpark business park. Smaller than the Wustermark development, the site will include four data centers delivering 57.6MW of IT load across 204,515 sq ft (19,000 sqm), with operations expected to begin in 2027.
