Italian telco Unidata and private equity firm Azimut Libera Impresa have formed a joint venture to develop a “green,” carrier-neutral Tier IV-quality data center in Rome. The UniCenter project will deliver 20MW of capacity with more than 2,000 racks across 140,000 sq ft in the Italian capital, powered by renewable energy sources.
The facility will operate on a wholesale-only basis, serving both Italian and international customers. Unidata will hold a 25% stake in UniCenter, with Azimut owning the remaining 75%. Initial investment is expected to total €57 million, including €5.7 million from Unidata and €51.3 million from Azimut.
Unidata will continue to deliver services through its existing data centers in Rome and Milan, as well as via UniCenter for clients requiring more than 30kW of capacity. The company also owns Unitirreno, which launched a domestic subsea cable in Italy in October 2025. Italy hosts more than 200 data centers, with the primary hub in the Milan-Bergamo corridor and a secondary market in Rome.
