UK Maritime and Coastguard Agency Plans New Data Center

Apr 03, 2026 | Posted by Dave Young

The UK’s Maritime and Coastguard Agency (MCA) is seeking a new data center provider. In a tender, the agency is looking for a partner to deliver and maintain a facility supporting its Long Range Identification and Tracking (LRIT) system.

LRIT is a global satellite-based system that requires ships to automatically transmit their identity and location every six hours. The data center will help the UK meet its obligations under the SOLAS convention, the international “Safety of Life at Sea” framework established in response to the Titanic disaster.

The data center must integrate with the MCA’s Maritime Domain Awareness Platform as a GIS layer, with the provider also responsible for migrating legacy LRIT data. The contract is valued at around £1.5 million ($1.98 million) including VAT, with a deadline of May 5, 2026, for applications. While the required location hasn’t been specified, the MCA is headquartered in Southampton on the UK’s south coast.
