Trump Admin Considers Semiconductor Tariffs On Data Center Servers

The Trump administration is considering new semiconductor tariffs that could also apply to products using chips, including data center servers.
The proposal is still in its early stages and could change. A phase-in period is being considered, with Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick supporting tariffs as a way to encourage US chip manufacturing.
“Reshoring semiconductor manufacturing is a top priority for President Trump, whose policies have already secured hundreds of billions of dollars of investments in this key sector,” White House spokesperson Kush Desai said of the report.
“The Trump administration remains focused on delivering more investments and economic relief for the American people while safeguarding our national security.”
The Computer and Communications Industry Association (CCIA) estimated that the tariffs could reduce US GDP by around $90 billion annually and delay or cancel 20% of planned data center projects through 2030.
