Telecom Egypt Pushes Back Against Rumors of Data Center Monetization

Apr 03, 2026 | Posted by Dave Young

Telecom Egypt has formally denied reports that it intends to convert its regional data center complex into a ‘cash-generating asset.’ The speculation originated from a March 30 report by the Egyptian newspaper Al-Mal, which suggested the move was intended to fund the company’s local expansion and business growth.

It remains uncertain if the reports pointed toward a property sale or a shift in colocation strategy. Regardless, Telecom Egypt released a statement through the Egyptian Exchange on March 30, confirming that no new developments have occurred and promising full transparency regarding any future updates. The state operator’s footprint currently includes 11 data centers across Egypt, anchored by its primary 4.6MW, four-campus facility in West Cairo’s Smart Village, which serves as a major hub for global submarine cable connectivity.

Despite its recent denial regarding broader monetization plans, Telecom Egypt remains on track to divest a majority stake in its Cairo Regional Data Hub (RDH) to Helios, as announced last year. Egypt continues to position itself as a strategic bridge for global telecommunications networks. To capitalize on this, government officials—including the Ministers of Electricity and Communications—are developing a framework of energy incentives and licensing reforms designed to scale up data center investment in the region, as reported by Fintech Gate.

To cement its status as a leading regional data center hub, Egypt has formed a specialized working group to spearhead a national strategy for green data infrastructure. According to government officials, the country’s competitive advantage lies in its unique geographic position and robust fiber-optic connectivity. This initiative supports the broader 'Digital Egypt' and 'Vision 2030' goals. With 15 active submarine cable systems—and three more currently in development—Egypt is leveraging its low-latency links to Europe and Asia to attract global investors.
