Oracle will sell Google's Tensor Processing Units through Oracle Cloud Infrastructure under a deal the companies announced on Oct. 27. The agreement makes OCI the first hyperscale cloud platform outside Google to offer the chips, Google Cloud said. Oracle operates the data centers and provides the power, cooling and data center networking for the TPU deployments. Google designs and supplies the TPU accelerators and the software stack that runs on them. The companies did not disclose financial terms.

Oracle describes the commitment as multi-year and multi-gigawatt. "This is going to be a cloud gigawatt-scale investment from Oracle over time," said Karan Batta, senior vice president of Oracle Cloud Infrastructure. "When Google launches a new TPU, we will have it on day one," Batta said, per Tech Times.

The chips are Google's eighth-generation TPUs, split into two architectures. TPU 8t is built for large-scale training, and TPU 8i is tuned for inference and multi-step reasoning, according to Unite.AI. Google says the systems are designed for direct liquid cooling at rack scale, a profile OCI's newer data centers are built to support.

OCI already offers Nvidia GPUs, including Vera Rubin systems that Nvidia and Oracle said the same day would scale to multi-gigawatt levels. Adding the chips lets OCI customers run workloads on either accelerator inside the same security boundary and billing relationship.

"Different AI workloads have different compute needs," said Mahesh Thiagarajan, president of Oracle Cloud Infrastructure. "Bringing Google TPUs to OCI gives customers access to multiple leading AI compute architectures in one cloud."

Google Cloud has offered TPUs to external developers since 2018. Google says TorchTPU, its PyTorch stack for the chips, is now open source on GitHub.
