Oni, which Gigas acquired in 2020, has announced that it has signed a 5-year-renewable contract agreement with Acciona Energia. This agreement will see Oni provided with 100% renewable energy for its facilities in Lisbon and Porto, as well as its internal operations.
Speaking about what this means for the company, Nuno Saraiva, CEO of ONI, said: "The environment is one of our company's priorities. The announcement that our data centers in Portugal will now be powered by 100 percent renewable energy is another step towards our goal of reducing our ecological footprint as much as possible."
According to both parties, renewable energy sources will be traceable via blockchain technology (GREENCHAIN).
Diego Cabezudo, CEO and Gigas co-founder, commented that "caring for the environment" is a top priority for the company. Adding: "The announcement that our data centers in Spain and Portugal are now powered by green energy is another step towards our goal of reducing our carbon footprint as much as possible. It is a responsibility that we must be mindful of as we are a major player in one of the most energy-intensive industries, IT."
That said, as highlighted by DCD, while the company's express commitment to sustainability, the environmental impact of blockchain technology has not been recognized. Blockchain technology and applications can be huge consumers of energy.
