The Retirement Systems of Alabama has renewed NTT's contract with them until 2033. NTT Data will manage the data center for the state pension agency for an extra eight years as part of the arrangement. The contract's worth wasn't shared. The downtown Montgomery data center has 300 racks and a floor area of 44,000 square feet. The colocation facility, which NTT initially assumed administration in 2020, rents space to about 50 tenants. Dave Turner, the division head of state, local, and education services at NTT Data, reportedly stated that the Retirement Systems of Alabama prioritizes investing in the state's economy. Turner said building this physical data center capability was one of their investment choices. They also understood that possibly their area of expertise was not IT, which was required to manage that data center in a professional manner.

The Retirement Systems of Alabama oversees a portfolio of $38.4 billion and administers pension funds for almost 481,000 active and retired public sector employees. NTT has already had a busy year. Only this month, the company made the announcement that it would work with SES to deliver private 5G networks and satellite-based Edge networks. It also experienced a significant outage in Japan that affected 500,000 Internet lines. In addition, the company has started construction on a new data center in Kolkata, India, and has opened a new one in Vienna, Austria. It also plans to build new data centers in Thailand, Texas, and Pune, India.
