Meta and Reliance are partnering to develop a 168MW data center in Jamnagar, Gujarat, India. Reliance will build the facility, which Meta will lease to run AI workloads. The project may be expanded in the future, though no launch timeline has been disclosed. Meta will cover power and water costs, with the site expected to run on renewable energy and use desalinated seawater.
Mark Zuckerberg, CEO of Meta, said: “This world-class facility in Jamnagar will help us scale our AI infrastructure globally while deepening our long-term investment in India’s economy.”
Reliance unveiled plans for a gigawatt-scale data center campus in Jamnagar in 2024, though it is unclear whether the Meta deal reflects pre-existing capacity at the site or a new addition. Meta previously invested $5.7 billion in Jio Platforms in 2020, acquiring just under a 10% stake. In 2024, reports also suggested Meta was exploring data center capacity at a Reliance facility in Chennai, India.
Mukesh Ambani, chairman and managing director of Reliance Industries, said the partnership represented a “transformative moment” for India’s digital infrastructure. He said: “Building India’s first built-to-suit AI data center for a global technology leader of Meta’s scale demonstrates India’s readiness to be at the forefront of the global AI revolution. At Reliance, we are committed to building world-class digital infrastructure that will power the next generation of AI innovation — not just for India, but for the world.”
