Paris: Lunar data center on the horizon

While a data center on the moon may seem outlandish now, soon it could very much be a reality, that’s according to NASA and ASI, the Italian space agency. As part of the NASA Artemis Moon program, ASI has teamed up with Thales Alenia Space (TAS) to study design concepts to support a facility being built on the moon within a decade.

Eleonora Zeminiani, head of the Human Exploration New Initiatives division, said that such plans are part of “Phase 2” of Artemis, which will focus on sustainability. According to the aerospace company, beyond 2025 a Lunar Data center will be required to support other lunar infrastructure already planned for deployment.

Once live, the lunar data center will connect to a moon-based cellular network built by Nokia.
The study is expected to be completed by the end of 2021.
