Large Data Center Reportedly Planned for Burgenland, Austria

A large data center project is reportedly close to being announced in Burgenland, eastern Austria. According to Profil, the facility could be built on a site of up to 1.24 million sq ft (114,000 sqm) owned by the Burgenland Economic Development Agency near Nickelsdorf. Burgenland’s regional government confirmed that interested parties had made inquiries about developing a data center on the site but did not confirm a project.

"During the rezoning process, the [Burgenland] economic development agency informed us that a data center was planned for this site," Nickelsdorf’s mayor, Gerhard Zapfl, told Profil, adding that the town had not been made aware of any plans for the site. “It affects my community. I want to know how many jobs this will create, how much energy will be needed, how much water.”

The Nickelsdorf site is co-owned by the Burgenland government and its Economic Development Agency, which announced plans for a business park there in 2023. Since then, the agency and state utility Netz Burgenland have received inquiries about supplying power to a large data center, reportedly requiring tens of megawatts. The site has become more attractive following the opening of a nearby hybrid solar and wind farm. If developed, the project would be Burgenland’s first data center; Austria currently has 52 facilities, according to DataCenterMap.\
