Greek multinational Karatzis Group is planning a €240 million ($278 million) data center investment in the Boeotia region, according to real estate news outlet eRed. Headquartered in Crete, the company is best known for manufacturing plastic netting for the agricultural, packaging, and construction sectors, and also operates in renewable energy and luxury hospitality.
Karatzis has not previously been involved in external data center developments, apart from facilities used internally at its headquarters.
The project involves the construction of seven data centers, spanning 342,465 sqm (3.68 million sq ft) in the Municipality of Orchomenos, some 100 km (62 miles) northwest of Athens.
The data center will sit on the Ampelia site, off the PATHE (E75) motorway, roughly 2km (1.2 miles) north of the nearby settlement of Kastro.
The project’s financing is expected to come from a combination of equity, bank loans, grants, and potential co-funding from European or national resources.
Construction will take place across three stages spanning 18 months. The first two stages will last eight months each and will involve the foundation works, site preparation, construction, and installation of supporting infrastructure.
