Egyptian conglomerate Intro Group plans to invest $270 million in the first phase of the Kemet Data Center project in Egypt’s Suez Canal Economic Zone. The 80MW facility will cover 80,000 sqm (860,000 sq ft) and be developed in two phases. It is expected to be partially powered by solar energy. Last week, Communications and Information Technology Minister Raafat Hendy met with Intro Group board member Sherif Mohamed Abdel Fattah to discuss the project.
They reviewed completed designs and contracts Intro Group has signed with suppliers for equipment and systems required for the project. The meeting also covered the project timeline and planned launch of Kemet Data Center services. In 2024, Intro Technology signed an MoU with Oman Data Park to develop the Kemet Data Center, which was valued at $450 million at the time. Hendy said the ministry is committed to creating an investment-friendly environment to encourage private-sector data center development.
Last month, Hendy met with US data center developers and a delegation led by newly launched Heca Data to discuss plans for an integrated zone for hyperscale and AI facilities in Egypt. The government has also approved a $400 million data center license for the new digital arm of construction group Hassan Allam to operate data centers and provide cloud services. Egypt’s national data center and cloud computing strategy aims to position the country as a major digital and subsea cable hub connecting Africa, the Middle East, and Europe.
