IIJ inaugurates its second facility on Japan's Shiroi campus

Internet Initiative Japan Inc. (IIJ) has established a second data center on a Tokyo-area campus. This week, the company revealed that the second phase of its Shiroi Data Center Campus in Shiroi-shi, Chiba Prefecture, has begun operations. The facility, which has been under construction since May 2022, will provide 10MW and space for 1,100 modules across 86,110 square feet. Currently, the building has 550 racks; by February 2024, the remaining half will be operational. The new air-cooled building features rack densities of 10 to 20 kW and uses on-site solar.

The Shiroi campus sits on a total of 430,555 square feet and will eventually encompass four buildings with 50MW distributed across 6,000 units. The capacity of the first structure, which opened in 2019, is 700 racks. In addition to housing an Edge data center deployment demonstration with Australian micro data center company Zella DC, the Shiroi campus also houses a Tesla Powerpack lithium-ion battery storage system. In February 2023, the corporation installed solar panels on the Shiroi campus. The company revealed a similar deployment in Matsue, Shimane Prefecture, in March.

The campus in Matsue City was inaugurated in 2011 and expanded in 2013. It comprises 172,225 square feet and 5 MW, with room for 4 MW. The company announced plans for a new 21,525-square-foot module with the capacity to house 300 units in 2025. The newly-installed solar panels are anticipated to generate approximately 340 MWh of electricity annually, equivalent to approximately seven percent of the Matsue DCP server building's energy requirements.
