Google has still not started work on its proposed $600 million data center in Becker, Minnesota. The search engine giant announced plans for the data center in 2019, yet, the two companies involved said they hadn’t abandoned the project. At the time of the announcement, Google said it was mulling over developing the data center on a site close to a power station in Sherburne County.

The land in question is owned by Xcel Energy. It is a 300-acre site that Google plans to develop a 375,000 square feet data center. However, Xcel said Google hadn’t bought the land. However, Google has an option to buy the land which is expiring at the end of the year. Commissioner Joe asked if there’s a concern that the development won’t continue. The lead assistant general counsel at Xcel, Matt Harris, replied that there’s still hope for the development, but the pandemic has affected the project’s timeline.

Google also noted in a statement that it is still considering the acquisition of the property. The company, however, said there’s no confirmed timeline for the development.
