Google will fund US$160 million of shared water infrastructure in Negeri Sembilan, Malaysia, for its planned Port Dickson data center campus. Google announced the commitment on November 2. Google funds the project and operates the data center campus the water will serve. Ownership of both facilities transfers to Menteri Besar Negeri Sembilan (Incorporated), or MBINS, a state statutory body, once construction is complete. Google coordinated the project with the Negeri Sembilan state government and the state water utility, Syarikat Air Negeri Sembilan.

The plant will supply the campus at Springhill Industrial Park and add to Malaysia's public water supply. The reservoir sits along the Linggi River and is designed to capture excess river flow and rainfall during high-yield seasons, which Google says will help reduce flooding in nearby areas.

"Google's decision to fund shared water infrastructure in Negeri Sembilan reflects our global ambition to replenish 120% of the freshwater volume we consume," said Drew Byrnes, director and head of global infrastructure and energy for Asia Pacific at Google. He said the company's water risk assessment found local sources were not at high risk of scarcity or depletion.

Google will also pay 100 percent of the power its data center campus consumes and the direct infrastructure costs to connect the campus to the grid. The company has signed power purchase agreements with consortia led by Shizen Energy-Solarvest and TotalEnergies to add clean power to Malaysia's grid. The Star reported the water funding is worth about 651 million ringgit.

Data Center Dynamics reported the campus occupies 389 acres at Port Dickson, about 90 kilometers south of Kuala Lumpur. Google has a second Malaysian campus under development at Elmina Business Park in Selangor, and it committed US$2 billion of investment in the country in 2024. The company is also funding clean energy education and workforce programs with the SOLS Foundation in Negeri Sembilan, including a 36-hour training track that starts in early 2027.

Baxtel lists 199 data center facilities in Malaysia, run by 69 providers, with Google operating three of them. The largest tracked facility in the country is YTL's JDC1 at 72 MW, and Baxtel records the 389-acre Port Dickson site as planned for 700 MW.
