The Scioto County Commission has confirmed that Google is the company behind a 500,000 sq ft (46,452 sqm), $1 billion data center project in Franklin Furnace, Ohio. Google's identity was revealed after the commission awarded the cloud giant a tax abatement on the project.

Google has been given a 75 percent tax abatement for 15 years as part of a payment in lieu of taxes (PILOT) agreement of $500,000 annually, and additional compensation based on square footage once the project is completed.

“Google is considering a potential data center project in Scioto County, Ohio,” Molly Kocour Boyle, head of Midwest data center public affairs for Google, said in a statement. “We are still very early in the process, working closely with the local leadership."
