Australian property group Goodman Group is moving forward with plans to develop a new data center campus near Tokyo. The company announced this week that it has been appointed lead development partner by a consortium of local landowners and stakeholders working on a proposed data center campus in Sagamihara. While the project is still in the planning stages, Goodman said it will support the advancement of the development, though detailed information about the scale, timeline, and specifications of the campus has not yet been disclosed.
Paul McGarry, head of Asia Goodman, said: “Sagamihara has all the hallmarks of a world-class data center location – access to TEPCO Power Grid’s high-voltage network, proximity to Tokyo, and a city government genuinely committed to sustainable growth.”
He continued: “We are delighted to bring our master-planning expertise and our proven track record in Japan and across the globe, and to work alongside the City, its landowners, and its residents to create a high-quality development that delivers lasting value for the community.”
The Asamizodai-Araisono North Association is working with Goodman Group, Nakajima Construction, and Sagamihara City Government to develop a master plan for the area. Sagamihara Mayor Kentaro Motomura said the proposed data center campus is expected to boost local tax revenues, create jobs, and strengthen the city's digital infrastructure. Traditionally focused on logistics real estate, Goodman now has data center projects across Asia, Europe, Australia, and the US. The company says it has access to 6.4GW of power capacity globally, with 700MW operational and 400MW under development, including projects in Los Angeles, Hong Kong, and Amsterdam.
