The government of Cambodia has begun construction of a new national data center. Chea Vandeth, minister of post and telecommunications in Cambodia, attended the groundbreaking event in Phnom Penh last week. The new center, according to Vandeth, not only provides secure storage but also seeks to increase the efficiency of public and private institutions through cost savings. When all data is centralized, costs are reduced, and security is increased. They anticipate that once the center is fully operational, it will enhance the digital development profile of their nation.
The $30 million, 12-story building will house government and private data upon its 2025 debut. According to reports, the new national data center will pursue Tier IV certification. Cambodia has a very limited market for data centers, but in May 2023, a new player, ByteDC, opened a 3MW facility in Phnom Penh.
