As part of Bolivia's digital transformation strategy, the government has announced plans for a 140mn-boliviano (US$19.7mn) data center in El Alto city. The project will see an initial investment of 772,000 bolivianos.

The development was announced by President Luis Arce this week, who called the facility, the 'Alternate Data Center' project ("Integral Data Center Alterno"), a 'milestone' for digitization in the country.

Arce outlined: "The comprehensive project of the Alternate Data Center in El Alto is being managed, which will benefit the 14 districts of our city, and will serve to store the identity information of Bolivians throughout the national territory." While certain details around the facility, including where it will be located (District 2) and its function (to 'house computer systems on a national scale,') further details are yet to be released regarding specifications.
