AWS has announced its plans to expand its footprint in Latin America with the development of a new cloud region in Santiago, Chile. Alongside this announcement, the company also explained that it had begun the process required to obtain an environmental permit for a $205 million data center in Chile's capital, namely the Puente Alto Data Storage Center.

In a comment to Reuters, Vice President for Latin America Jaime Valles told Reuters, said: "In the future we plan to invest more and expand our physical presence in Chile, to the extent that customers demand it and need it to meet their needs."

In addition to this, Valles said the company would continue to invest in Latin America despite political turbulence: "The best technology, more education, more programs for start-ups allow us to make an important difference for Latin America," Valles said. "That is our long-term vision and as you can imagine, that is totally independent of the governments in power."
