Bitdeer completes 100MW Bhutan cryptomine data center

Aug 10, 2023 | Posted by Abdul-Rahman Oladimeji

Bitdeer, a Singapore-based cryptocurrency miner, has finished building a new mining data center in Gedu, Bhutan. During the facility's power-on testing, 11,000 mining devices are operating normally. The company announced in July that it bought 23,000 mining devices, with an additional 7,000 en route, for a total of 30,000 mining machines that will eventually be housed at the facility.

The facility was constructed after Bitdeer and Bhutan's investment agency attempted to raise $500 million in May 2023. At the time of the fundraising, it was anticipated that the project would lead to a 100MW data center supported by hydroelectric power that would be completed through June and September. Bhutan spent 5% of its gross domestic product on Bitcoin mining equipment.

Bitdeer's operations consist of self-mining, hash rate sharing, and the hosting of mining machines for other miners. This is Bitdeer's first data center in Asia. Along with its partner Druk, the company maintains six data centers for crypto mining in Washington, Texas, and Tennessee in the United States, and in Norway, with a total capacity of 775MW. The company intends to boost this to 1.524GW but has not specified a timeframe.
