Amazon Web Services (AWS) highlighted strong expansion in its latest sustainability report, saying it added more data centre capacity globally than any other company last year, including over 1.2GW in Q4 alone. Between October 2024 and October 2025, AWS added a total of 3.8GW. CEO Andy Jassy said this effectively doubled the company’s 2022 capacity and put it on track to double again by 2027. AWS also operated 56.8 million sq ft (5.28 million sqm) of data centre and office space in 2025, up 16% year-on-year, according to its 10-K filing.

About half of AWS’s data centre footprint is owned, with the remainder leased. The company also reported consuming 2.5 billion gallons of water in 2025. For context, the UK had around 1.6GW of data centre capacity in 2024, according to government estimates, while Virginia—the world’s largest data centre market—has up to 8GW in operation and another 4GW under development, according to JLL Research.

AWS rivals have also expanded rapidly, though most do not disclose detailed capacity figures. Microsoft said it brought online 1GW of data centre capacity in FY2026 Q2—roughly the same period as AWS’s Q4—and a total of 2GW in FY2025. Despite rising competition from neocloud providers, AWS remains the largest global cloud provider, with a 28% market share, according to Synergy Research. Microsoft holds 21%, followed by Google at 14%.AWS_cheetah.width-358 (1).webp
