Amazon has leased an additional four acres of land at its site in Powai, Mumbai, expanding its data center footprint in India. According to The Economic Times, the land has been leased from Larsen & Toubro Ltd under a 17-year agreement through Amazon Data Services, the company's primary data center subsidiary. The lease is valued at Rs 650 crore (approximately $68.1 million) over its 17-year term and increases Amazon Data Services' total leased land at the Powai site to 13.5 acres.
Amazon first leased 5.5 acres at the Powai site in August 2022, followed by another four acres in August 2023. At the time of the initial agreement, the company said the site would be developed as a data center. AWS launched its Mumbai cloud region in 2016 and invested $3.7 billion in the region between 2016 and 2022. In 2025, the company announced plans to invest a further $8.3 billion in cloud infrastructure for its AWS Asia Pacific (Mumbai) Region.
AWS is also expanding elsewhere in Maharashtra. In April, the company unveiled plans for a $429.8 million data center on a 49-acre site near Taloja in Navi Mumbai, east of Mumbai. In December 2025, Amazon committed to investing $35 billion across India, including in data centers and AI infrastructure. The company also operates an AWS cloud region in Hyderabad, which launched in 2022. Late last year, AWS announced plans to invest an additional $7 billion to expand its data center footprint in the Hyderabad region.
