Amazon AWS: AWS Buys 50+ acres in Thane, India For Possible Data Center Development

Amazon Web services has acquired a parcel of land in India. The company bought over 50 acres of land in Thane district, Mumbai for Rs 1,800 crore ($218 million). It is expected that AWS will build a data center on the site. The site was acquired from Ananta Landmarks, a subsidiary of real estate developer Kalpataru. Economic Times of India reports that Kalpataru acquired around 70 acres of land in Thane through two different transactions in 2004 and 2010 for Rs 300 crore (about $36m in today’s conversion rate.

AWS opened a Mumbai data center region earlier in 2016. The region also has three availability zones. AWS is working on launching another Indian region in Hyderabad. Local zones are also planned in Bangaluru, Kolkata, and Chennai.
