According to Star Exponent, Amazon wants to develop two data centers in Stevensburg, Virginia. Per the report, Marvell Development- a subsidiary of Amazon Data Services has asked for 243 acres in Culpeper County, Virginia to be rezoned from agricultural use to light industrial use. The company plans to develop two data center buildings spanning 430,000 square feet of space and a substation.

Despite the plan, Susan Gugino, the Stevensburg District Supervisor said the location is the wrong one for developing data centers. He said the district wants to preserve its historical and agricultural resources. He added that the district’s plan doesn’t show that the area will be turned into an industrial park. Culpeper County currently houses four Equinix data centers which opened 14 years ago. Northern Virginia also has the highest data center concentration globally. AWS also currently owns and operates many data centers there with facilities in Ashburn, Haymarket, McNair, Warrenton, Manassas, and Chantilly.
